Open Source software: Ubuntu and Open Office at The Forest

Start: 15/07/2008 - 18:15

End: 15/07/2008 - 18:15

Tuesday 15th July
Ubuntu operating system (replaces Microsoft Windows)
Open Office (replaces Microsoft Office)

The Forest introduces Open Source software: A series of talks

These days, Open Source Software is becoming more and more mainstream.
Favoured by technical people for decades (did you know most websites are
hosted on Open Source software?) it is now so easy to use that normal
people everywhere are discovering its benefits.

The benefits? This is software you can download legally for free - but
best of all, it's free in more ways than that. As in anyone has the
legal right to change it, use it and distribute in many ways.

This takes the position of power away from faceless corporations and
returns it to ordinary people. Microsoft, a company which has been
convicted of abusing its monopoly position on two continents, can never
again dictate to you how you will or won't use your computer.

You can set it up to require less computing power than Microsoft
Windows, and thus you can rescue old computers and put them to use
again. Or you can unlock the power in your new computer.

The Forest ( http://theforest.org.uk/ ) is hosting a series of practical
introduction talks for those wanting to find out more. 6:15 to 8pm,
upstairs, at 3 Bristo Pl, Edinburgh.

Tuesday 3rd June
Firefox web browsing
Thunderbird and encrypted email
Encrypted file systems

Tuesday 17th June
Working with Graphics and desktop publishing - The Gimp, Inkscape and
Scribus

Tuesday 1st July
TBA (maybe audio and video editing if we can find a presenter!)

Tuesday 15th July
Ubuntu operating system (replaces Microsoft Windows)
Open Office (replaces Microsoft Office)

If you are planning on coming, please drop a quick note to us at
opensource@theforest.org.uk so we know how many to expect.

Thanks,
The Forest people.

Subversives' Sunday Social (Glasgow)

Start: 13/07/2008 - 18:00

End: 13/07/2008 - 18:00

Now a regular event. Second Sunday of the month.

Upstairs at the Junction Bar, George St (near Queen Station)

Music, food, films and a friendly introduction to campaigns in Glasgow.

Think that the most productive part of meetings is the informal chat afterwards?

Want to get involved in making Glasgow better but don't know where to start?

Got a project you need help with?

Or just nothing to do on a Sunday now the football season's finished?

Then join us this Sunday for an informal get-together with fellow subversives. We're planning to show films, play music and have speakers introduce some of the projects they're involved in. Leave dogma at the door, and let's discuss what we can do.

More details later...
